Attorney Profile

Carlos Maury, Immigration Lawyer & Former U.S. Immigration Judge

A former Immigration Judge who decided cases at the Van Nuys Immigration Court, now the lawyer on your side — for individuals, families, and businesses, in immigration court and federal court, nationwide.

From the Bench, to Your Side

We built this firm on an uncommon idea: that the people facing the immigration system deserve an advocate who has sat on the other side of it. We bring the discipline of the courtroom, the clarity of a judge's perspective, and a relentless commitment to the people who trust us with their future.

Meet Carlos Maury

A former Immigration Judge, now your lawyer

Carlos E. Maury served as a U.S. Immigration Judge at the Van Nuys Immigration Court, appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder and hearing cases from June 2015. From the bench, he presided over hundreds of immigration matters — including roughly six hundred asylum cases decided on their merits in recent years.

Before the bench, he served with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Department of Homeland Security, in Los Angeles from June 2002 to May 2015, as assistant chief counsel and rising to deputy chief counsel. Earlier he served as district counsel with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service in Miami (2000–2002), and began his legal career as an assistant public defender in Florida’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit (1993–2000). His full career, with dates, is on Our Story.

Judge, government counsel, public defender: few immigration lawyers have seen a case from every seat in the courtroom. That experience shapes how the firm works today. We understand how immigration decisions are actually made, what persuades, and what real preparation looks like when a person’s future is on the line.

Cases we prepare: if you or someone in your family faces one of these matters, Carlos Maury and our team prepare the case and build the record from the first meeting: Deportation defense · Asylum · Criminal immigration · Green cards · Immigration bond · U visa & VAWA · Waivers · Appeals · Citizenship.

The Maury Difference

Perspective

Carlos Maury has sat in the decision-maker's chair. That rare vantage point informs the strategy behind every brief, hearing, and appeal we handle.

Preparation

Meticulous, evidence-first preparation is our edge. We anticipate the questions a judge will ask — and answer them before they're raised.

People

Behind every case is a person, a family, a business. We treat your matter with the seriousness — and humanity — it deserves.

Working together

Carlos Maury & Erika Roman

Carlos Maury works together with immigration attorney Erika Roman of ELR Law Group. Erika has practiced law since December 2001, representing clients before the Immigration Courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Department of Homeland Security in Los Angeles, California.

She earned her Juris Doctor at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, where she received the American Jurisprudence Award, and her B.A. in Political Science, cum laude, from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is a member of the State Bar of California.

Together, Erika and Carlos bring complementary perspectives to complex cases: her years representing clients before the courts and the Department of Homeland Security, and his experience as an Immigration Judge, government counsel and public defender. That helps anticipate challenges and strengthen the legal strategy. No lawyer can promise an outcome; every case is decided on its own facts and the law.
