He Was Told to Deny Them. He Refused.
The story of Carlos Maury Law does not begin in a law office. It begins in an immigration courtroom — with a judge who chose his conscience over his career.
As a United States Immigration Judge, Carlos Maury was pressured by the administration to deny more people — to grant less, move faster, and send more families away. He refused.
When that refusal made him a target and officials moved to force him off the bench, he refused again to compromise. He would not let political pressure decide cases that belonged to the law. So he made a choice few in his position ever make: he stepped down from the bench — and built a law firm devoted to defending the very people he had been told to deny.
That decision is the foundation of this firm. Everything we do begins there.
A career spent inside the immigration system
Carlos E. Maury served as a U.S. Immigration Judge at the Van Nuys Immigration Court, appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder and beginning to hear cases in June 2015. From the bench, he presided over hundreds of immigration matters — including roughly six hundred asylum cases decided on their merits in recent years.
His path to the bench gave him a rare, all-angles view of the system. Before becoming a judge, he spent more than a decade with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Los Angeles (2002–2015), rising to deputy chief counsel, and earlier served as district counsel with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service in Miami. He began his legal career as an assistant public defender in Florida's Eleventh Judicial Circuit (1993–2000), representing people who needed someone in their corner.
