San Francisco Immigration Court Closes: Its Cases Now Belong to the Concord Immigration Court

On May 1, 2026, the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) announced that the San Francisco Immigration Court will permanently close, and that its Sansome Street location will become a hearing location under the administrative control of the Concord Immigration Court. The closure took effect at the close of business on September 4, 2026. Cases that were on the San Francisco docket are now Concord cases.

This is general information about an EOIR announcement, not legal advice. The source is EOIR's notice EOIR to Close the San Francisco Immigration Court (opens in new tab) (May 1, 2026).

What EOIR announced

The May 1 notice says "the San Francisco Immigration Court will permanently close, and its Sansome Street location will become a hearing location under the administrative control of the Concord Immigration Court, at the close of business on Sept. 4, 2026."

EOIR gave one reason. Working with the General Services Administration, it "determined it would be more cost effective to relocate its court operations at 100 Montgomery Street to the nearby Concord Immigration Court."

On what happens to cases, the notice says two things:

The notice does not give separate filing instructions.

How we got here: the April 10 notice

A few weeks earlier, on April 10, 2026, EOIR had announced a smaller change in a separate notice (opens in new tab). It said the court's Montgomery Street location "will no longer hold hearings effective at the close of business on May 1, 2026." Certain cases were reassigned to the court's Sansome Street location (630 Sansome Street, 4th Floor, Room 475), with filings for those cases at Sansome Street beginning May 4, 2026. The filing window at 100 Montgomery Street stayed open "until further notice" for the court's other pending cases.

That arrangement is now history. The May 1 notice replaced it: the San Francisco Immigration Court itself closed on September 4, 2026, and Sansome Street became a hearing location run by Concord.

Where things stand now

EOIR's own lists reflect the change:

What this means if you have a case at the San Francisco or Concord Immigration Court

A court closure does not end a case. Your case continues in removal proceedings before the Concord Immigration Court, and missing a hearing can still lead to an order of removal in your absence. Practical steps:

  1. Read your most recent hearing notice. EOIR said it would send new notices to every party whose case was reassigned. The newest notice controls the date, time and place, which may be Concord, the Sansome Street hearing location, or a remote hearing.
  2. Check your case online. Use EOIR's Automated Case Information portal at acis.eoir.justice.gov (opens in new tab) with your A-number to confirm your next hearing and the court handling your case.
  3. File with the right court. Do not send new filings to a San Francisco address from an old notice. Follow the instructions on your latest hearing notice, and check the Concord court page before you file.
  4. Keep your address current. If you move, file Form EOIR-33 with the court within five days, as 8 CFR 1003.15(d)(2) (opens in new tab) requires, so the court's notices reach you.
  5. Get advice early. If you have a hearing coming up or a deadline in the old San Francisco case, talk to a lawyer about deportation defense before the date.

Frequently asked questions

Is the San Francisco Immigration Court still open?

No. EOIR's May 1, 2026 notice said it would permanently close at the close of business on September 4, 2026. EOIR's operational-status page no longer lists a San Francisco court.

Where will my hearing be held now?

EOIR said reassigned cases will be heard at the Concord Immigration Court or remotely, and that the Sansome Street location becomes a Concord hearing location. Your latest hearing notice and EOIR's case portal show your actual location.

Did my case restart or get cancelled?

No. EOIR said cases will still be adjudicated at Concord or remotely. Your case keeps its history; only the court handling it changed.

I moved recently. What should I do?

File Form EOIR-33 with the court within five days of moving, so EOIR's new hearing notices reach you.
